The first reaction stepping out of Cocktail – “Wow”, followed by “Hold a Sec – is it?” then finally a “Good Movie” indeed.

Firstly, I would like to applaud the director (Homi Adajania) for choosing such an un-conventional script for his first main stream big movie after, critically acclaimed Being Cyrus. To all the potential viewers, treat this movie on the basis of pure human emotion without judging on the grounds of morality, you will like it.

Imtiaz Ali has once again proved that, his scripts, in spite of all their complexities holds that true human emotion (Moral or Immoral - Debatable) which are very appealing.

The story begins with Gautam Kapoor played by Saif Ali Khan, a uncontrollable flirt who shifts to London for his new job & Meera played by Diana Penty a typical Desi girl dumped by her husband on the streets of London.

Enters, Veronica played by Deepika Padukone a leading fashion photographer and self proclaimed “Snobbish B***H”. Veronica helps Meera in making a fresh start to her life, till they bump into Gautam, only to become best of friends.

Story takes a twist when Gautam walks out of a living in relationship with Veronica falling for the true love of Meera, which she reciprocates. To sum it up Gautam loves Meera, Veronica loves Gautam & Meera loves Gautam. To know how this complex tale of love unfolds, you have to see the movie.

Coming to individual credits first it’s the director who has done a splendid job, so much so that even a minute detailing has been taken extreme care. Take the introductory scene of Meera, a first time  Desi going abroad, sweater on salwar, luggage tied with nylon ropes etc.

The best part of Homi’s direction was he kept the story and performances of the characters real. With such a fabulous starcast it is always tempting for a director to go over the top and he has just not done that. Mark of sensible director..!

Coming to actors, Gautam’s role is a cake walk for Saif, he has just done that in the past and he does it now with the same perfection. Diana Penty for new comer has put up a good show. My favorite performance of the movie is Deepika Padukone, who has literally given everything to her character (Including her clothes - Joke). Not every actress can play veronica – take it. Boman & Dimple with their superb comic timing just adds in.

Anil Mehta with his brilliant cinematography just makes movie picture perfect. Pritam’s tunes hit the right chord too.

To end, Cocktail is brave and a brilliant movie and it deserves a definite watch.

Tweaking Rumis quote from Imitiaz Ali’s Rock Star – “ Leave beyond the boundaries of right thinking & wrong thinking there lies a movie Cocktail- Watch it. (Ofcourse in a theater near you)

My Rating : 4/5
