The movie Department starts
with a quote “Power Corrupts –Absolute Power Corrupts Absolute” let me rephrase
it “Bad Movie Fails – Absolute Bad Movie Fails Absolute”.
As I was watching Department, the first thing that came
across my mind was, is this the same director who has made movies like Satya, Company & Sarkar that changed
the course of Hindi cinema.
In one line Department is a cocktail mix of “Ab Thak Chappan,
Company & Sarkar” which has went horribly wrong in every aspect. Poor story
line, pathetic camera work, irritating background score, meaningless songs
& some cold performances just adds another nail in audience’s misery
coffin.
Sticking to RGV’s forte, Department shows the nexus between
police, mafia & politics. Set in the backdrop of Mumbai, story begins as
the government decides to start a new anti mafia department headed by the most
happening officer Mahadev Bhosale played by Sajay Dutt. Mahadev ropes in a
suspended cop Shiv Narain played by Rana Dagubbati in his team to wipe out the
leading gangsters Sawathiya played by Vijay Raaz and his rival Mohammad Ghauri.
Another angle to the story is Sarjerao Gaikwad played by Mr.Amitabh
Bachchan who is a gangster turned politician. The story unfolds as Shiv Narain gets to know
Mahadev, whom he has idolized actually works for Mohammad Ghauri.
Mahadev with help of Sawathiya’s gang member D.K played by
Abhimanyu Singh & his hot girl friend Naseer played by Madhu Shalini starts
a new gang to eliminate Sawathiya so that Mohammad Ghauri can have absolute
control over Mumbai.
On the other hand Shiv Narain who wins in the confidence of Sarjerao
Gaikwad by saving his life from an attack comes to know that Sawathitya
actually works for Sarjerao Gaikwad & the government.
How Shiv Narain takes on Mahdev & D.K with help of Sarjerao
Gaikwad is the crux of the story.
Coming to individual performances except for Rana Daggubati who
tries to put in an honest effort & Sanjay Dutt in bits & pieces, remaining
bunch has nothing to offer. It is a shame that legend like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan
has not been used to his fullest capacity.
All in all Department proves to be another default piece from
RGV factory which fails to connect with the audience. Watch it at your own risk…!
My Rating: 1/5
