Producer: Bejoy Nambiar & Natasha Sahgal
Duration: 170 Minutes
Before I start writing about David, would like to credit Bejoy Nambiar for giving such a refreshing and off the beat movie.
David revolves around the lives of three people spanning from three different time lines. The common thread that is holding them is the name “DAVID”.
1. David (1975): Ghani, the leading realtor, construction agent and above all the man who funded the bombing operations of Lashkar in India is located in London. RAW wants Ghani dead, and are in search of a Rat which would kill him. David (Neil Nitin Mukhesh), the godson of Ghani becomes the rat when RAW agents reveal him his parents horrible past and its relation with Ghani. David is now stuck in a dilemma, to kill or no to kill Ghani.
2. David (1999): Struggling guitarist from a Lower middle class family with his two sisters and a father, who is a Christian priest in a suburb of Mumbai, defines David (Vinay Varmani). David’s life takes wings as he cracks a big music deal. But, soon they are dashed up by local politician Malti Tai (Rohini Hattangady) when she and her henchmen assault David’s father accusing him of religious conversions. David is now stuck in a dilemma, to kill or no to kill Malti Tai.
3. David (2010):  A Drunkard fisherman, abandoned by his fiancée on the wedding day, hated by his town people, is the David for you from Goa. His hate for women ends when he meets the love of his life Roma (Isha Sharvani), the fiancée of his best friend Peter. David with the help of her best friend Frenny (Tabu) woos Roma. Finally comes the wedding day of Roma & peter, giving David the dilemma, to tell or no to tell her about his love
How these three different dots are grouped into a one single line is the plot of David.
Coming to other aspects, let me start with Bejoy Nambiar the writer & director who epitomizes the new age unconventional film making. David is just a replica of that. His cast selection, the inter relation of three different stories, the detailing to the minute aspects of story and above all his wonderful taking of the story line just makes David a pleasant experience. The biggest plus point for the movie is, the realistic feel which every character brings in to the movie.
Wonderful camera work, beautiful locations coupled with some sharp editing just makes every frame of the movie beautiful. Bejoy Nambiar’s decision to experiment with Indian musical artists just does wonders, Mikey McCleary and Rekha Bhardwaj’s Dama Dam Mast Kalandar or Remo Fernandes’s Maria Pitache and my personnel favorite Yuhi Re by Anirudh Ravichander & Shweta Mohan are just some examples.
Neil Nitin Mukhesh as the dark and stylish godson gives an intense performance in the movie. Vikram & Tabu brings in the comedy touch with their wonderful comic timing and screen presence. Isha Sharvani bears the beauty torch for the movie with her elegant looks.
Prolonged time line and dragging of few characters especially that of David from 1975 are the two negatives of the movie.
For all those who believe in unconventional & real movie making David is a must watch.
